How does a fleet insurance policy work for coaches and buses?

Fleet insurance for coaches and buses works in exactly the same way as it would for any other type of fleet. You pay a specific amount to cover your coaches and buses, either in a monthly payment or as one large lump sum payment for the year.

Unlike individual policies, coach and bus fleet insurance allows you to cover anyone with a licence in your business to drive your vehicles. This kind of insurance is particularly useful for the likes of coach and bus drivers who may drive a different vehicle each day.

How many coaches do you need for fleet insurance?

How many coaches you need will depend on the insurer. Some providers may offer cover for a fleet with just 2 vehicles, whilst others may have more stringent rules and require a minimum of 5 vehicles.

Insurers set their own rules about the minimum and maximum number of coaches you can have, but it does generally tend to be quite flexible with many insurers allowing dozens of vehicles under one policy.

Does coach fleet insurance provide cover for contents on the vehicles?

No, coach fleet insurance doesn’t usually provide contents on the vehicle and separate coverage will need to be acquired.

Depending on your business model, you may need Hire and Reward insurance or Good in Transit insurance. However, at FleetCover, we will take the time to get to know your coach or bus businesses, ensuring your insurance policy covers all of your needs.

Benefits of combined fleet insurance for coaches and buses

There are a number of different benefits to combined fleet insurance for coaches and buses, including:

  • Saving money – Having a combined policy and ensuring all your vehicles are under one policy helps to save money that would have been spent on pricier, individual policies.

  • Singular renewal dates – Only having one renewal date means you don’t need to worry about keeping track of multiple dates. This can avoid any potential mishaps or mistakes from happening since you only need to keep track of one date.

  • Full protection – With combined fleet insurance policies, passengers and luggage can be included under one policy as standard. Goods in transit policies can also be included to align with the annual policy.

  • Policies can be upgraded at any time – If further down the line you decide you want to upgrade your policy, you can do so with minimal disruption.

Are there any exclusions to coach and bus fleet insurance?

Depending on your insurance provider, there may be some exclusions with coach and bus fleet insurance policies.

Some exclusions can include:

  • Drivers under a certain age, usually 21 and under
  • Inexperienced drivers who have had the licence less than a specified amount of time
  • The condition of the vehicle since vehicles that are older may be higher risk
  • The area where the vehicle is driven, such as those with a higher chance of crashes
  • Where the vehicle is stored overnight
